On October 24, 2024, the Mills River Town Council lifted restrictions on temporary housing consisting of RVs, campers, and similar units to address the need for housing options in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene.
Town ordinances normally prohibit the use of a recreational vehicle or camper as a primary residence. Usually, RV's and campers can only be used for short-term stays, and only within a permitted RV park, not on privately owned land. This moratorium temporarily lifts these restrictions for a period of one-year, until October 24, 2025, unless the moratorium is extended by Town Council at a later time.
The Town recognizes the impacts of Tropical Storm Helene have caused devastating and catastrophic damage in our region, and to households within the Town of Mills River. Due to damage to private property and structures, many people have become displaced without necessary shelter going into the colder winter months.
Mills River Town Council is addressing this need by lifting these restrictions. RV's, campers, and similar units can now be placed on private property for temporary housing needs until October 24, 2025.
Please contact the Planning & Zoning Department to ensure any temporary housing units are located appropriately and can be connected to temporary utilities. We can be reached at (828) 890-2901 or at planning@millsriver.org.
